wip treatment? "My Dim Sum Girl"

Two people are seen walking. a very blurry shot of them walking down the street.

their feet are shown walking down the same route, followed by hand motions still not revealing their face. They're talking about love and how they'll never find it. A shot of a girl talking, revealing her sad face. The other character says something, and you can see the back of their head. Back to the other character, and back again revealing a very large moustache. The character is now revealed to be an asian man with a large asian afro. They talk about their dream girls, and the man explains how he's always dreamed of falling in love with a restaurant worker. How he wishes to marry an asian lady who will cook him asian food galore.

The other stares in disbelief and astonishment, shocked that their friend is still obsessed with the idea of finding the perfect dim sum girl.

He exclaims that maybe one day he'll find his dim sum girl and their just jealous! The other friend stares awkwardly with an eyebrow raised as the man nods and strokes his chin. The man looks happily into the sky and walks happily thinking about his future love. Camera pans up and pans down revealing a change in day.

The man is walking down the aisle filled with people walking by him, and he bumps into this girl along the way. He shakes off the encounter and tries to help her. in the process of retrieving her books their hands meet. He sees her and is instantly drawn in by her beauty. She angrily stomps up to him and begins to yell and push him. However all he sees is her smiling and looking pretty at him. Asking him very cute adorable things, while seeming innocent. back to reality where she's still angry and mumbling under her breath.

He breaks his chain of thoughts and places both his hands on her shoulder. He makes a move and asks her to go out on a date to a restaurant and the girl replies that she isn't interested. Or he's not her type. He's crushed, the girl of his dreams has once again escaped his clutches. However he's determined to prove his worth to her. As she walks away he's determined to be popular like her.

Scenario #1
He follows her around outside of school, and sees her meeting up with her friends. They smile at each other and begin to take pictures. A series of still shots showing the camera shots are depicted, with him being awkwardly placed or third-wheeling in the situation. It reverts back to the present story, and they're seen sitting apart from one another. Yet he can't get her attention. He realizes he needs to do something and write some words on paper and it hits her head. She looks around and rubs her head. Then  goes back to talking. Suddenly a giant barrage of papers come flying at her and she looks angrily at the direction of the papers. The boy is seen sitting casually whistling in the other direction.  The boy is seen laying in bed staring at his wall. Thinking thoughts about her, and staring at an awkward picture of his face cut out and placed next to his crush. He rolls over and smiles happily thinking about the day he and she r can be together.

Scenario #2
He follows her home. and she

Scenario #3
She agrees on a date with him, yet he finds himself completely out of place in her society. She's eating a sandwhich, and he's eating a pork bun. He realizes she's not into him, and assumes it's because of his asian qualities. He shyly hides the pork bun behind him, only to get an interested glance from his date. She points at his back, showing a smile mixed with interest and entertainment. He looks the other away, and scratches neck awkwardly.

They begin having an awesome date, him being himself around her and not masking his identity. She accepts him and they have a really nice date filled with romance and flirting.

After a long day and both seeming happy they finally find themselves alone on a bench. He starts talking, and he can't find the words to say since he keeps stuttering. The boy pulls out a package of post it notes from his bag and stares at the girl. On the note he writes that he's had a wonderful date. and the girl smiles. Then he places another paper on the bench asking her if she's willing to be his girlfriend. He then passes the paper to her along with a pen. The girl looks surprised and worried, but then looks back at the paper quickly. She jots down an answer and pushes it back towards him. He reads the paper and looks shocked at her...

Black screen. pan of him laying on a couch, staring at this piece of paper. A shot of the sticky note saying, " Sorry, you're a bit weird. Let's be friends thought! :)" Followed by a reaction shot of his face.

Finally realizing that he can never be with his crush, he gives up. He's seen moping and looking sad. He calls his friend and replies how he was right….that there isn't any hope for his unrequited love. His friend replies telling him to be more confident, but he sadly discards the text and continues to regret.

He decides to go use the restaurant coupons and orders a meal. He looks very sad and looks longingly into the distance. suddenly a girl with a hot plate of food comes out. She seems to be a worker in this restaurant, and she spots him. She slowly approaches him, acting quite bashful and shy. He slowly looks out of the corner of his eye and can't believe his eyes.

She says "d-d-dim sum?" and places it on his table. And the man stares at awe and sees her in a radiant light. He talks and invites her to sit down, and she gladly accepts. and they sit down and eat the dim sum together. <3

  2. This treatment is well written and is filled with creativity. Though it is super asian and I seriously don't know what Dim Sum is XD. There are some grammatical errors but it did not really affect the outcome of the plot. This would go great as a romantic comedy. It is filled with humor yet still adds that romance as the boy is looking for his love which always seems to be out of reach. The best scenario would be number 3 since the ironic ending wraps up the comedic aspect and romantic aspect well. The one problem I have with your script is that you gave no characterization background as we don't know that he is unpopular until he actually says he wants to be popular like her. Other that that the script is very well written and shows your natural writing talent.

  3. This is evidently a romantic comedy for I found that even I giggled a few times while reading through. The act structure seems fairly organized, with the exception of scenario 2 being unfinished. As a character driven plot, you don't hold back from crucial moments of characterization, such as the sudden mood change from the bench scene to the couch scene. Overall, good treatment! Can't wait to see it in production!

  4. This was a touching treatment. Although I personally believe the romance genre is oversaturated, this treatment made me smile (ONLY A LITTLE.) I think this is an insightful look into a culture very different from our own, that of the afro'd asian man. Besides the obvious comedy, some underlying themes were present in the piece. I agree with Vargas; The ironic ending really does give a sense of closure. I feel as if maybe Scen. 1 should actually be re-written into the narrative that still encompasses #3, but that's my own opinion. I think it would be a pretty interesting short film, and the lack of dialogue really gives it the art house film feel.
