IB Film Documentary - Punch and Whale Rider

  1. Focus: The only problem that I see some grader having with this piece is that it lacks a research question. You definitely made clear that you will be looking at the coming of age story as portrayed through two different cultures, but you didn't really specify what about that part you would be focusing on. You just didn't phrase it in a question, that's all. The focus was mainly how these characters in "Whale Rider" and "Punch" develop into stronger and enlightened individuals.

Structure: You structured the commentary by stages and how they are relevant in the movies. These included the background, main character not fitting in, and the process where the character are finally accepted. I really liked how you made the structure as simple and clear as that. Everything seemed to connect and I felt that you were talking about both movies as a part of one genre, which is what I hope you were aiming for in this genre research.

Language: The language you used complemented how you spoke. I would have liked you to use more film language. There is some, but it seemed as if you looked at it more like a written work. I thought that the analysis of the rope of great and I loved how you connected both films. You mentioned the word "Bildungsroman" and talked about how that translated to film's "coming of age story. I would have liked to see more of that. It's written beautifully, but more film language would help in getting more points.

Research: There are clear references made about critics and audiences. I’m sure you used more, but not too many of them were referenced to in the documentary.

Visuals: I liked that you used different clips straight from the film as well as pictures where necessary. However, I'm sure you know this as well as I do, there are part of the documentary when there is nothing but a black screen with only a voice over. When used though, I feel the clips are relevant to what you're saying.

Narrator's Delivery: I liked the narration simply because of how clearly you spoke. I believe being effective in stating your point is more important than being humorous because being effective with good material is good entertainment.

    As always, great work Kim!
    Waaaaay better than mine.

  2. Hey Kimberly. I really enjoyed listening to your commentary on these two films. In regards to your research question, you thoroughly discussed the elements that addresses it, making it completely clear that you were looking at the coming of age story as portrayed through two different cultures. I think what made the scope of your documentary clear and strong was how you mainly focused on how the characters in "Whale Rider" and "Punch" develop into stronger and enlightened individuals. Making the structure of your documentary clear and simple made it easy to follow and understand. Everything connected and you talked about how both movies reflected each other as a part of one overall genre. The use of film language complimented the way you spoke within your documentary. I really enjoyed and found it insightful how you mentioned the term “Bildungsroman” and talked about how that contributed and translated to films’ recurring theme of coming of age. I think there was an adequate use of visuals and clips within the documentary, however your delivery was strong and kept me intrigued in your commentary making it easy to follow and understand. Amazing job as always Kimothy.
